VCUG's suck

Kayden had to have a VCUG the other day and it was not fun. He is now at the age that he can communicate how he is feeling and that he doesn't want to be there. Basically they insert a catheter into his bladder and fill his bladder up with dye. They fill it until it is completely full then take pictures to see what is happening when he has a full bladder. They particularly wanted to check to see if it refluxes back into his transplanted kidney.

What they found was that it is refluxing into the area that his native kidneys are and it is basically just sitting in there because the kidneys are not working. The radiologist said that it would be considered severe reflux into that old system.

What do we do now? We don't know yet. It is up to his nephrologist as to what they should do. He may need to be on a low dose of antibiotics to combat the recurrent infections or they may have to perform surgery to fix the situation.

I agree completely. Brick had one done before his transplant, and it was unpleasant then. Keep us posted on what the Doc's decide.

That was the first time I ever heard him ask questions about what they would be doing at the hospital. He was so concerned about it. Broke my heart. He has always just taken everything in stride, but I guess it was just a time in his life when he wasn't aware yet. Now we will pray for him to understand and be comforted. I love that kid so much, as well as all my grandchildren.
