BK Virus

Ever since Kayden received his transplant he has been tested for the BK virus. This virus only lives in transplanted kidneys and is a virus that can cause inflamation in the kidneys and other problems. If it isn't caught early and treated then it can ultimately damage the kidneys which is why they take a urine sample every time we are there. If it is caught early then there are things that can be done to help prevent this from happening.

Over the past few months Kayden's BK numbers have been slowly going up and it has reached a level where it should start showing up in the blood. Once it does that then they need to do things to treat it. Usually they decrease the immunosupression medication. Yesterday when we had a blood draw they ordered the blood test and it came back negative but the levels in his urine were pretty high. We were told that we have to have monthly blood and urine tests until we see that this virus is under control. Right now we are waiting till next month when we draw blood again to see what action we will be taking. The blood test came back negative. Apparently these blood tests are VERY pricey so they only do them when they have to. The doctors require that the blood tests have to come back negative 3 times and then they will stop testing the blood for the virus, but will continue to test the urine in the office. So we are on a wait and see right now.
