This week has gone by way too fast. I have a ton of things that I have not gotten caught up on and my kids just keep making more messes. It didn't help that we were gone for 3 days.
We had Home Health come by for the training on the IV antibiotics that I have to give to Kayden. She can come 3 days out of the week and then I have to do the rest. She will for sure be here next Thursday because I am having surgery.
Kayden is doing very well. His pediatrician said that he doesn't see very many cases of Mastoiditis. We will have follow-up visits with him probably every week and then after the 21 days of antibiotics we may possibly have a follow up CT scan to make sure everything is clear but we are going to leave that decision up to the infectious disease doctors at the hospital.
As I was reading about Mastoiditis, I thought that it was very interesting that this infection was one of the leading causes in childhood deaths. This was, of course, before they had antibiotics to treat ear infections. This made me think a little bit about things. It is common practice to give kids antibiotics for ear infections but there has been an increasing number of doctors and parents and others who say that antibiotics should not be prescribed for ear infections due to an increase in antibiotic resistant strains because of antibiotics being overprescribed. So there are people who will not treat ear infections and just let them run their course. Well this whole experience has got me thinking twice about this. I understand that my child is immune compromised and is kind of a "worst case scenerio" type deal. But if the leading cause of getting mastoiditis is by untreated ear infections then if we don't prescribe as many antibiotics to then won't we have the same problem that we had prior to the antibiotics being used to treat ear infections? To me it only makes sense to treat the ear infections so that the problem does not spread and get worse. Just a little thinking on my end.
One of the great things that I have enjoyed over the long drives is the chance to read the Book of Mormon while Josh is driving and so that we can catch up to where we are suppose to be in our challenge. We truly have been blessed during the time that we have been reading the Book of Mormon. We were reading the little Book of Mormon book that the church puts our for kids with the pictures but we finished it and we are now having the kids sit in with us during our reading and it has been really nice. When I read in the car the kids are in the back and the music is turned off and they are listening also. I keep reading in places that as long as you are reading together they will be learning something out of it.
While we were in Primary Childrens we met a girl who went to school with Josh. Her name is Angel and he little boy Charlie has been in the hospital since the end of January. She took him there because he had been sick and she took him to the doctor and he said it was an ear infection and told her to give it time and he should get better. Well he never got better and she ended up taking him to PCMC and he had meningitis. This cute little boy is now blind, deaf, and has major brain damage because of this bacteria. He is the cutest little boy and his little story brings tears to your eyes, but their outlook on the whole thing is just inspiring. They have such hope and a great outlook on things. Go visit them and let them know that you are thinking of them. My heart just hurts for them and for the pain that they have gone through but I really feel like there little boy has a purpose here on earth and they may not know right now what it is, there will come a time when they will know what that purpose is.
I am off....Good Night
