To buy Hybrid or not....

With gas prices so outrageous there have been lots of talk about people buying Hybrid cars or converting their current cars to use either natural gas or other. So is it worth it?

I just saw a piece on the Today show discussing this topic. They talked about the Hybrid cars and how much they cost and how long you would have to use them in order to recoup the cost of the vehicle. It will take at least 7 years to start to show any savings, premiums are higher on Hybrids and they are having a shortage right now on batteries for Hybrids which is also why they have at least a 6 month wait on them. The cost of a Hybrid is around $26,000. This is average for most of the Hybrids.

So the question is....Is it worth it? I do know that those little cars right not are not big enough for my little family. They do have a Hybrid Tahoe out, but it gets worse gas mileage than my Ford Explorer.

We are trying to save money in the gas department by staying home more, not taking as many trips to Price or to Salt Lake and when we do make trips we are making sure that we have a few things that need to get done, I am ordering more things online, I don't go more than 65 mph lately. I found out that you can save quite a bit of gas by going 65 than by traveling at 70 or even 75, this fall we will not be as involved in as many things so that we don't have to waste time trying to get to different activities. I have thought a little bit about how it is interesting that the Church leaders have told us that we are too busy and we need to not be involved in so many things and spend more time with out families and I am beginning to think that it is two fold. We do need to spend more time with our families, but also the Lord knows what the future brings and he knows that there is hard economic times ahead and this is one way that we can save us some money. When we move to Salt Lake we will use Trax as often as we can. On Doug Wright he calls it Throttle Back. We need to slow down, not go so fast, look at areas in our life where we don't need to be so involved and really look at what we are using our vehicles for and if we can consolidate and cut back on things.

This November I am also going to vote for the person that has the best plan, one that includes plans on how we as a country are going to do better i.e. building more refineries, allow off-shore drilling, look into ways that we can increase the supply of gas. One thing I found interesting is that the demand for gas has increased world wide, but the gas industry has not increased its production for a lot of different reasons. There is not enough refineries to make the gas, there has not been an increase in drilling in other places to increase the supply. The supply of oil has not increased in more than a decade and even longer. I am not sure on the exact amount of time, but basically even though the demand is higher the supply has not been increased but yet they are demanding more money for something that is not being supplied higher. That does not make sense to me and we need to hold our elected officials accountable for this.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

I saw an article the other day that listed like 6 ways to cute on gas. 1 was driving 65, not tailgating is another. Slowing down without pushing on the brake. So coming up to a red light slow down further away. Not jump at the lights and slowly make your way up. Don't idle so if you are sitting in the drive through it is cheaper to just go in. Also that you don't need to "warm up your car"

Those are what I know. What was a kick in the gut today was I filled up and it was 4.09. I obviously didn't drive around looking for the cheapest gas but we were coming home from therapy. Anyway, my car only gets driven to and from work. And to Tylers appointments. The Jeep gets driven further and gets filled up more. I still think D needs a motorcylce. This is nuts!!

Shane and I bought a bi-fuel CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicle today!! It's .73 cents a gallon! They are HOT right now. We are so excited. We got it from www.cngmotors.com

I have heard some good things about those cars and I have heard not so good things.

The only thing about natural gas is that once everyone starts to get them the rule of supply and demand will come into play once again and the price will start to go up. When you live in rural areas you don't have enough places to fill up at. How big is the tank and how many miles can you go per tank?

The not so good thing I heard is that it adds additional weight to your vehicle and that when you get into an accident your chance of explosion of a lot higher because of the pressurization in the tank.

There is also a difference between the Hybrid that I was referring to and the converted vehicle that you are talking about.

Hybrids use both gas and another source of fuel. The converted vehicles use a single fuel source that once was gas.
